Ryan ten Doeschate has stepped down from his role as India’s men’s assistant coach after the conclusion of the white-ball tour of England. The former Netherlands all-rounder had earlier communicated his intent to the BCCI during the UK tour and is likely expected to report back with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a coaching role before next season.

India’s fielding coach T Dilip will also resign after the Indian cricket board decided against extending his national team contract.

According to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, both coaches fulfilled their contract terms earlier this year. While Ten Doeschate’s deal ended on June 10, Dilip’s contract was up two days earlier. But both continued with the Indian squad until the conclusion of the England tour.

He said there was no resignation process involved as both contracts expired. The board is also assessing a list of candidates for the position and it hopes to have his replacement in place ahead of India’s tour of Sri Lanka in August, he added.

In 2024, Ten Doeschate joined the Indian coaching set-up again as head coach Gautam Gambhir was appointed to the top job after India’s T20 World Cup win. Gambhir handpicked him and he provided both the bat and ball, making himself a mainstay in the support staff.

His return to KKR will see him reunite with Abhishek Nayar, whom he worked with within the IPL franchise and later in the Indian team as well.

The ex-all rounder has had a long relationship with Kolkata Knight Riders. As a player, he was part of the KKR teams that won the IPL title in 2012 and 2014, before coming back as KKR’s fielding coach in 2022. He stayed with the franchise until 2024, contributing to KKR’s title winning season under mentor Gautam Gambhir and head coach Chandrakant Pandit before moving into the national side.

While with India, the side won the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, 2025 Asia Cup and successfully retained their 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. India had a tough phase of Tests, including their loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy away to Australia as recently as the 2025-26 season and home series defeats (0-3) versus New Zealand and South Africa (0-2).

At the same, T Dilip too had ended his second spell with the Indian team as a specialist fielding coach. He had a one-year term as India’s fielding coach from 2021 until the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and rejoined India for another year during its Test tour of England in early 2025. Now his contract ends and he too will leave the national set up as it is evident that BCCI would appoint a new fielding coach.
